Born in Omaha Nebraska my family moved to the foothills of Colorado when I was 10 years old. I quickly fell in love with the mountains and outdoors. I was lucky at the age of 15 to get my first job at one of the most respected golf courses in Colorado, Hiwan Golf Club. It was during these years that I began to develop a love for golf course maintenance and an appreciation of the beauty a well-maintained course offered. While attending Colorado State University, I soon realized that I had a passion for greenskeeping and made the decision to switch majors and pursue a degree in turfgrass management.
Based on my love for the mountains, I took an internship at Vail Golf Club, in Vail, CO. Working in the short season and fast paced environment of Vail proved to be an eye-opening and rewarding experience. I learned a great deal that summer and the experience was highlighted with preparation of the golf course for the Gerald Ford Invitational PGA golf tournament.
The following summer, I secured a second internship at Morrish/Weiskopf designed Eagle Springs Golf Club in Wolcott, CO. Eagle Springs had opened 2 seasons earlier and at the time was one of the most exclusive memberships in the US This opportunity exposed me to the highest level of golf course conditioning and gave me a great education into the management of modern bentgrass greens. Following my graduation from CSU I returned to Eagle Springs and worked as a foreman on the crew and spent my winters on the mountain at Vail.
Shortly after my engagement to my wife and a relocation to Denver I was given the opportunity to join the staff at Sanctuary in Sedalia, Colorado. Working at Sanctuary, I became an excellent leader, a consummate professional, and mastered the skills required to maintain a golf course at the championship level. I oversaw the daily operation of a world class top 100 golf course. Supervising a staff of up to 50 employees and completing many major projects over the years. The results of our hard work showed as Sanctuary was consistently ranked as a top 100 golf course in all major golf publications.
After a very successful tenure at Sanctuary, I was looking for new challenges and to further my professional development. An opportunity presented itself, as the First Assistant Superintendent at Colorado Golf Club in Parker, CO. Colorado Golf Club a Coore/Crenshaw design which had recently hosted the Senior PGA Championship, was preparing to host the 2013 Solheim Cup. I was given the responsibility of managing the daily maintenance operations of a 2nd world class top 100 golf course and brought truly fast and firm conditions to the club in preparation of its upcoming international event.
While finishing preparations for the Solheim Cup, I was offered a now rare opportunity to become the project manager for the construction and grow in of a new Jim Engh golf course in Minot, North Dakota. At that time in the US there were only a handful of new golf courses being built and it was a chance that could not be passed up. Managing and coordinating the construction of the golf course and clubhouse, I was able to bring this major project in on time and budget, while establishing maintenance programs that provide excellent conditions on a daily basis. Minot Country Club received national acclaim from all the major golf publications
After 12 years in Minot and with my daughters off to college far away the itch to tackle a new challenge struck. The opportunity at Tepetonka presented itself and at the time seemed like something that couldn’t be passed up. I have worked the last season tirelessly as the Director of Grounds to grow in a super high-end and high-profile project. Tepetonka promises to be one of the finest golf courses in America when completed.
